Concrete Planning News

In October 2023, Tony Brown Aggregates, an existing producer of ready mixed concrete currently utilising volumetric trucks, received planning consent from Cumbria County Council for a concrete batching plant at its yard in Lindal-in-Furness, four miles from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. The scheme represents a change in the business model for the company as the volumetric trucks will be replaced by a batching plant and traditional barrel truck mixers.

The change from volumetric to batching plant concrete production has been made to simplify operations overall with one person acting as batching plant operator responsible for the mixes (which will be standardised at the new plant), each truck driver being responsible solely for the delivery of the concrete and not involved in the mixing operation, and the truck mixers have less mechanical and technical components than the volumetric mixers.

A new Euromecc Fast 100 Dry Batch Mobile Concrete Plant will be supplemented by four aggregate bins and two 60 tonnes capacity vertical silos for the storage of cement. Delivery will be made by three truck mixers (directly replacing the existing three volumetric trucks) of either 6m3 or 8m3 capacity. It is envisaged that between 70-105 m3 of concrete will be produced daily, equating to around 20,000 m3 annually.

Much of the aggregates required for the concrete mixes will be supplied in-house from the aggregates recycling facility the company operates at the same site.

The operating hours for both the ready mixed concrete plant and the aggregates recycling facility will be the same being 07:00-18:00 Monday-Fridays and 08:00-14:00 on Saturdays with no operation on Sundays or Bank Holidays.
