Structural Robustness and Disproportionate Collapse in Buildings
Venue
The lecture covers robustness and disproportionate collapse in all building types, with a focus on existing buildings, as well as an introduction to the IStructE book's second edition.
Following the launch of Structural robustness and disproportionate collapse in buildings (second edition), aimed at shedding light on the current uncertainties around disproportionate collapse, this talk will explore some of the key takeaways from the research included in the publication.
Speakers will briefly discuss how the Eurocodes for timber, steel, concrete and masonry have been interpreted, and will provide specific examples of how to calculate design tie forces of buildings, the building regulations and the definitions of ‘material change of use’ and ‘building work.’
A discussion on the structural performance of buildings, their design life and the best practices to assess their safety with respect to the Reliability Index will conclude the lecture.
