New batching plant approved in Dewsbury

A planning application submitted to Kirklees County Council for a new concrete batching plant in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire has been approved. 

The new development, for Newlay Readymix, will replace an existing plant at the same site, requiring a relocation due to Network Rail’s planned upgrade. 

The original plant, approved in April 1997, provides ready-mix concrete to clients as well as utilising concrete for the production of concrete blocks on site. The new concrete batching plant will be approximately 11.5m tall and 36m wide and will include one cement silo, a feed hopper and a mixer. The design will also include a drainage scheme for a soakaway solution, a replacement for the current two-storey office and an additional single-storey office block.

The multi-billion-pound Rail Network project, impacting the Newlay Readymix site, is the Transpennine Route Upgrade. The main purpose of the project is to improve the rail network between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York and by expanding the number of tracks from two to four, between Huddersfield and Westtown (Dewsbury), it has resulted in acquiring land owned by Newlay Asphalt, located adjacent to the rail tracks, for part of the upgrade.

The planning application, submitted in March 2024, for the new concrete batching plant in Dewsbury, coincides with planning consent given by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to Newlay Asphalt, a sister company of Newlay Readymix. This approval grants permission for Newlay Asphalt to build their second asphalt plant in Yorkshire. The company currently has three operating concrete products plants, one asphalt plant and one ready-mix concrete plant all located in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.
