FP McCann boosts concrete output with QMS quarry upgrade
FP McCann has upgraded one of its Northern Ireland quarries with new cone crushers and screening equipment supplied by Quarry Manufacturing & Supplies (QMS), improving the efficiency and precision of its concrete materials production.
The UK’s largest precast concrete manufacturer, FP McCann operates multiple quarries to support its in-house production of concrete infrastructure, rail and utility products, as well as ready-mix and surfacing materials. The company invested in the new plant equipment in 2023 to improve material quality, cycle times and environmental performance across its supply chain.
Following site assessments and equipment trials, QMS supplied two of its B-Series B4 cone crushers along with four screening units—two 2 m x 7 m double-deck screens and two triple-deck variants. QMS is also providing spare parts, consumables, and ongoing aftermarket support for the new plant.
The B4 cone crushers, manufactured in the UK, are designed for reliability and reduced operating costs. Built with cast steel components and spherical roller bearings, the crushers are equipped with a hydraulic overload protection system. This allows the crusher to automatically respond to tramp iron and uncrushable material, protecting the machine and minimising downtime.
“A blend of high motor power, large eccentric throw and increased speed gives the B-Series greater capacity than other crushers of comparable size,” said Jonathan Beck, managing director at QMS. “We also support our equipment with in-house engineers, allowing us to adapt any plant to meet the customer’s requirements.”
The screening systems, also manufactured in-house by QMS, are designed for ease of maintenance and operational safety. According to QMS, wider spacing between screen decks offers improved access during inspections and servicing. Quick-change media and spare parts are intended to maximise uptime and maintain production throughput.
FP McCann employs around 1,600 people across 12 UK manufacturing sites and delivers a broad range of precast products for major projects in rail, energy, water and civil infrastructure. The quarry upgrade reflects the company’s ongoing investment in efficient and sustainable production.
“We’re pleased that FP McCann selected our B4 cones and screens and delighted that the company is happy with both the production and the support we committed to delivering,” added Beck.
