HS2 opens twin precast bridges in Warwickshire
Two new precast concrete bridges have opened near Leamington Spa, providing key connections for road users and cyclists as part of HS2’s Warwickshire infrastructure works.
Delivered by Galldris on behalf of main works contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI, the bridges carry both the Fosse Way (B4455) and the Offchurch Greenway across the new high-speed rail alignment. Each structure is formed of precast beams supported on reinforced concrete piers, with the precast method chosen for its speed, precision, and reduced on-site carbon impact.
The Fosse Way bridge, measuring 78m long and 14m wide, accommodates a new pavement alongside the carriageway. The adjacent Offchurch Greenway bridge, at 68m long and 22m wide, carries a popular walking and cycle route between Leamington and Rugby, featuring grassed verges on either side to support biodiversity.
The openings follow completion of the Welsh Road underbridge in February and the A46 box structure in April, bringing the total number of major bridges completed in this part of Warwickshire to four in 2025.
Across the HS2 route, more than 200 bridges are being constructed — from small pedestrian and wildlife crossings to major viaducts such as the Colne Valley, the UK’s longest rail bridge.
The use of precast components and in-situ concrete piers reflects HS2’s emphasis on efficient, low-carbon construction, supporting UK supply chains in precast production, reinforced concrete, and infrastructure delivery.
