MKM Building Supplies has achieved a Silver Medal in its latest sustainability assessment by EcoVadis, scoring 70/100 and placing the company within the top 15% of assessed businesses worldwide.

The independent builder’s merchant has improved its EcoVadis rating by 28 points since its first assessment, reflecting measurable gains across environmental impact, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.

Rachel Constable, head of ESG at MKM, said: “Achieving a Silver EcoVadis Medal is a great milestone for us. It shows that our commitment to doing the right thing – from working with suppliers to supporting local communities and helping customers build greener – is making an impact. We know we’re not done yet, and this recognition gives us more drive to keep improving.”

MKM’s sustainability approach combines environmental investment with strong community engagement. Each branch operates under local directors with support from head office, allowing teams to choose and support local charities, causes, and sustainability initiatives.

The company’s new Cheltenham branch, built to BREEAM Excellent standards, sets a benchmark for future developments with all-electric systems and on-site renewable generation. MKM is also transitioning to lower-carbon logistics, including electric forklifts and alternative-fuel HGVs.

As a Gold member of the Supply Chain Sustainability School, CLC CO₂nstruct Zero Business Champion, and member of the Builders Merchants Federation Sustainability Working Group, MKM continues to align its operations with wider construction decarbonisation goals.

Constable added: “Achieving Silver is a great result, but what matters most is the direction we’re heading. We’re committed to keeping that momentum and working with customers, suppliers, and communities to build a more sustainable future.”
