Andrea Pigorini elected new president of ITA
Andrea Pigorini, head of infrastructure engineering at Italferr S.p.A., has been elected president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES).
The announcement was made during the 51st General Assembly of the association, held alongside this year’s World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2025) in Stockholm.
Pigorini succeeds outgoing president Arnold Dix, who has led the organisation since 2022. The ITA thanked Dix for his “outstanding leadership and dedication”, calling his term “a fantastic journey”.
With a background in engineering leadership at Italferr—part of the Italian State Railways Group—Pigorini is expected to bring a strong technical and strategic focus to his presidency, reflecting the global challenges and opportunities in tunnelling and underground infrastructure.
The General Assembly also confirmed the election of Klaus Rieker as the new first vice president of ITA-AITES. With extensive experience in the tunnelling sector, Dr Rieker is expected to bring valuable insight and leadership to the organisation as it enters a new phase.
Singapore was selected as the host city for the World Tunnel Congress 2028, while next year’s congress will take place in Montreal, Canada.
The British Tunnelling Society has congratulated Pigorini on his election and encouraged professionals to follow its updates for ongoing developments in the sector.
