Cemex UK has partnered with James Watt College, part of Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMet), to support the development of a new concrete testing facility designed to upskill the next generation of construction professionals.

The facility – officially unveiled last week at the college’s Great Barr campus – allows students to pour, cast and test concrete in a fully integrated environment that mirrors real-world site conditions. It will be used across BMet’s construction and infrastructure courses and is aimed at equipping learners with technical knowledge aligned to industry standards.

Lex Russell, materials managing director at Cemex UK and chair of the Mineral Products Association (MPA), said the initiative exemplifies how industry and education can collaborate to support long-term sector needs.

“Two of the key components in supporting growth across construction and infrastructure are the supply of materials and the availability of a skilled workforce,” he said. “We’re very proud to support James Watt College, which offers exceptional facilities to help meet those needs.”

The partnership has already led to tangible outcomes. George Howell, an apprentice fitter at Cemex, is currently enrolled on an electrical course at the college and was recently recognised at the MPA’s Health & Safety Awards, winning an Individual Recognition Award and finishing runner-up in the Young Leader category.

Andy Lees, senior director of curriculum and construction at BMet, said: “This new facility and our partnership with Cemex gives students the chance to experience current site practices in a safe, structured setting. By co-designing course content with industry input, we’re helping learners develop job-ready skills that match real sector demand.”

James Watt College specialises in construction, engineering, health and early years education, with particular emphasis on practical, trade-ready training. The new testing space complements existing infrastructure teaching facilities on site and will be used by learners working toward qualifications in groundworks, technical operations and utilities.
