CLC launches health, safety and wellbeing strategy
The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has launched a new Health, Safety and Wellbeing Strategy, unveiled at a sector summit attended by government and industry leaders. The strategy was formally introduced by Sarah Jones MP, minister for industry and co-chair of the CLC.
Developed in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Construction Industry Advisory Committee, Mates in Mind, and companies across the construction supply chain—from major contractors to SMEs and product manufacturers—the strategy aims to deliver a safer, healthier, and more resilient construction sector.
The plan includes the creation of a CLC Health, Safety and Wellbeing Group, which will track industry-wide progress using shared performance data and report directly to the CLC Board. Key objectives include improving mental health provision, reducing accidents and illness, retaining talent, and making the sector more attractive to new entrants.
Mark Reynolds, CLC co-chair, said: “We all have a responsibility to improve the safety, health and wellbeing of our people. With the Government investing in homes, energy and infrastructure, we must raise our game so everyone goes home safe, well and supported every day.”
Minister Sarah Jones added: “Better health, safety and wellbeing for construction workers is essential to meet our ambition of building 1.5 million homes and growing the economy. This strategy helps ensure the industry attracts and retains the talent it needs.”
Sarah Newton, chair of the HSE, welcomed the initiative: “We hope this helps the industry put the same focus on preventing ill health as it has done on preventing injuries. It’s a great opportunity to drive lasting improvement.”
