HSE urges action on workplace vehicle safety after latest fatality figures
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a reminder to employers to review and strengthen their transport management procedures following the release of new figures showing that 14 workers were killed by moving vehicles in 2024–25.
Being struck by a vehicle remains one of the leading causes of fatal and major injuries in the workplace, particularly in sectors such as construction, quarrying, logistics and manufacturing — where vehicle and pedestrian movements frequently overlap.
The HSE’s updated Workplace Transport Safety resources include practical guidance covering vehicle safety, site layout, and lift truck operations, helping employers identify hazards and implement proportionate control measures.
Publications available through the HSE website include Workplace Transport Safety: An Employer’s Guide and Workplace Transport Safety: An Overview, both aimed at improving awareness and compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
With vehicle incidents continuing to account for a significant share of workplace deaths, the HSE is urging all organisations to review their risk assessments, reinforce segregation of vehicles and pedestrians, and ensure operators receive up-to-date training.
