HSE updates guidance on PPE use at work
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has updated its guidance on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the workplace.
Employers are reminded that they must provide PPE free of charge if a risk assessment shows it is needed. Typical items include safety helmets, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and harnesses. PPE also covers respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to prevent workers from inhaling dust, mist, gas or fumes.
The revised guidance sets out:
- when PPE should be used,
- what the law requires under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992,
- how to manage risk using PPE,
- selection, maintenance and correct use of equipment.
The regulations require PPE to be properly assessed for suitability, maintained and stored correctly, provided with safe-use instructions, and used as directed. Employers must also ensure workers receive sufficient information, instruction and training.
Since April 2022, duties have been extended under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work (Amendment) Regulations to cover “limb (b) workers”, such as many casual or dependent contractors. This means they must be supplied with PPE on the same basis as employees.
The guidance also includes updated information on conformity marking following the UK’s exit from the EU. A full copy of Personal protective equipment at work: Guidance on Regulations (L25) is available free from HSE Books.
