CRA launches training scheme to tackle concrete repair skills gap
The Concrete Repair Association (CRA) has launched the UK’s first industry-wide specialist training pathway for concrete repair, addressing a growing skills shortage across the sector.
Approved by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the new Specialist Applied Skills Programme (SAP) provides an 18-month structured route to an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 Diploma in concrete repair.
Developed in collaboration with industry employers, the initiative combines 20 days of formal off-the-job learning with supervised on-site training. Participants will cover core practical skills including surveying and testing, surface preparation and breakout, steel protection and replacement, structural repair methods, protective coatings and waterproofing, crack injection and corrosion control systems.
All modules also integrate key safety qualifications such as CITB Health & Safety Awareness, UKATA Asbestos Awareness, PASMA access training, and Emergency First Aid at Work.
CRA executive officer Lauren Fairley said the programme marks “a significant milestone for our industry”. She added: “With an ageing workforce and growing demand for skilled repair specialists, we recognised the urgent need for a structured, accredited pathway that blends theory with real-world practice. CITB approval gives employers the confidence to invest in developing their future workforce.”
The pilot scheme, which opens this autumn, will initially accept eight trainees, with one candidate per company. It is open exclusively to members of the Concrete Repair, Corrosion Prevention and Sprayed Concrete Associations.
Trainees must be at least 16 years old, employed full-time by a CITB-registered company, and hold or apply for a CSCS Trainee Card within three months of starting. The programme supports new entrants, career changers and existing operatives seeking formal qualifications in concrete repair.
Graduates will complete the course with industry-recognised certification, equipping them for long-term specialist careers in concrete refurbishment and protection.
