Ian Evans, principal engineer at the Concrete Society, has become the first concrete technologist to achieve Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status through the Engineering Council.

A long-standing member of the Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT), Evans’ successful application represents a milestone for the profession, offering formal recognition of competence, skills and experience developed throughout his career.

The IEng designation is intended for professionals who manage and apply developing technologies, often in design, manufacture, construction and operations. It demonstrates a commitment to professional standards and continuous development.

Reflecting on his achievement, Evans said: “As someone who has worked in the industry for a number of years and taken the opportunity for practical and academic learning throughout my career, the IEng route acknowledges my skills and experience, without any bias as to when or how I gained that knowledge.”

He added that the IEng route is particularly valuable for those who have not followed a traditional degree pathway: “The benefit of the IEng is that it recognises the skills gained from within a working environment and that the individual is suitably competent to undertake a role at a higher level. Therefore, as the UK’s first concrete technologist to gain IEng, I would encourage those with an equivalent diploma level qualification that this is an alternative route map to professional status.”

The Concrete Society, in partnership with the University of Derby and the ICT, offers training and qualifications to support career development in concrete technology and engineering.
