Doka rolls out AI counting for formwork and scaffolding

Formwork and scaffolding specialist Doka has begun using AI-powered tools across more than 50 of its global locations to streamline how returned rental equipment is counted and recorded.

The new system, developed in-house and supported by Microsoft, uses a mobile device to photograph materials. Doka’s AI Counting & Identification tool then recognises the items, suggests a quantity, and logs the data once confirmed — creating a reliable, traceable record.

According to Doka CEO Robert Hauser, the tool is already transforming operations: “AI helps us process returns faster, get equipment ready for use more quickly, and plan inventory more accurately. It also gives us a more transparent and objective process, which builds trust with our customers.”

More than 1.5 million items have already been counted using the system, covering 20+ product categories, from Framax panels and props to beams and scaffolding components. The tool delivers a 98%+ accuracy rate, even when identifying heavily used or soiled parts — something traditional RFID systems can struggle with.

The innovation forms part of a wider digitalisation push. Doka also uses AI for statistical return forecasting and will soon launch Doka 360, a platform linking formwork planning, ordering, site use and return. The platform integrates real-time sensor data from formwork and concrete to help customers track performance and manage assets more effectively.

Why this matters to the UK concrete sector
AI and automation are increasingly critical in improving supply chain efficiency and equipment turnaround — especially on major UK concrete pours and infrastructure jobs where time and stock accuracy are vital. Doka’s AI solution shows how formwork suppliers can support UK contractors through faster, smarter workflows and data-driven transparency.
