MKM names Dave Castle COO amid rapid growth
MKM Building Supplies, the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant, has appointed Dave Castle as its first chief operating officer as part of a wider strategy to accelerate national growth while maintaining strong local service.
Castle, who previously held senior roles at Travis Perkins including group chief commercial officer and managing director of BSS, brings more than two decades of experience in the building materials sector. He will report to MKM chief executive Kate Tinsley.
The appointment comes on the back of a record year for MKM. In 2024, the company grew revenue by 6.4% to £986 million – outperforming the wider market – and opened 11 new branches. It also expanded into areas such as HVAC and tool hire.
Commenting on his new role, Castle said: “What makes this business different is the unique mix of local, independent feel and national scale. It’s a merchant that genuinely puts tradespeople first – and that’s why it’s winning.”
MKM supplies a wide range of building materials to trade and retail customers, including ready-mix concrete, aggregates, cement, and landscaping products. With over 120 branches across the UK, each run by local teams, MKM gives branch directors autonomy to stock materials tailored to regional demand – an approach that has proven popular with concrete contractors and small builders alike.
Castle said his priorities include supporting local teams, expanding into new markets, and helping customers navigate regulatory and product changes – including growing interest in more sustainable construction materials.
Tinsley added: “Dave’s commercial experience, deep sector knowledge and leadership style are a great fit for MKM. As we scale up, his appointment reflects our focus on growing with purpose – investing in people, supporting branches, and staying true to our values.”
Castle will also lead MKM’s work on logistics improvements, digital tools, and sustainability, ensuring the business can meet rising demand for greener materials and efficient delivery. Talent development is another focus, with plans to attract new people into the industry and provide career growth through apprenticeships and hands-on learning.
