Roger Bullivant Limited (RBL) has completed a series of substation foundation projects across the UK, showcasing its geotechnical expertise and ability to meet complex piling requirements in live utility environments and restricted access sites.

At Willesden, the RBL South Central team used a compact 900 Series rig to install 10 sectional flight auger (SFA) piles in a confined area surrounded by sensitive infrastructure. With limited concrete access, a grouted piling solution was adopted, alongside protective sleeving to safeguard underground services. Precision planning and communication were critical to completing the works safely and efficiently.

In Thurrock, RBL delivered more than 12,000 linear metres of 250mm driven precast concrete piles to support a new 275kV substation for Statera Energy. The piles were manufactured in-house using low-carbon concrete with 50% GGBS, enabling high load capacity (up to 500kN) across mixed ground conditions, including deep soft alluvium and chalk.

The Amersham substation required 64 SFA piles, chosen for their suitability to firm clay soils and ease of installation in tight working areas. Compact rigs and careful sequencing allowed RBL to meet the structural requirements with minimal disruption.

Across all sites, RBL’s in-house design, manufacturing and rig fleet allowed it to tailor pile types to site-specific ground profiles and access restrictions. The company’s use of low-carbon materials and value-engineered solutions supports infrastructure resilience while reducing environmental impact.
