Cemex cuts pallet use with new block packaging
Cemex UK has invested in new packaging machinery at its Dove Holes facility in Derbyshire to make its concrete block supply chain more sustainable.
The company has installed one horizontal and two vertical strapping machines, supplied by Gordian Strapping Ltd, to create ‘voided’ packs. These packs are designed with a hollow centre, allowing forklift trucks to lift and transport blocks without the need for timber pallets. The systems also use 100% recycled plastic bands to secure the products.
Cemex first trialled the system at its Northfleet plant in Kent, where it has already saved more than 100 tonnes of timber. With Dove Holes now adopting the approach, the company can offer voided packs for both dense and lightweight blocks across the North and South of England.
Sam Culshaw, national sales manager for concrete products at Cemex, said: “This is a great leap forward for Cemex to now offer void packs in more regions. Reducing the use of wooden pallets cuts costs and helps us pass savings to customers, while supporting a more sustainable future as part of our net zero ambitions.”
Cemex said the move underlines its commitment to the circular economy, reducing waste and improving efficiency across its operations.
