CIOB links construction sustainability to UN goals
A new report from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) offers a practical guide to aligning sustainability strategies in construction with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Published to mark the end of Professor Mike Kagioglou’s term as CIOB president, the report draws on insights from roundtables with leaders across construction, infrastructure, consultancy and academia. It aims to help organisations embed sustainability more holistically while unlocking innovation and improving collaboration.
“As this report and many others have demonstrated, it is simply not enough to continue at our current pace,” said Professor Kagioglou. “The UN SDGs offer a useful tool and framework for addressing our approach in a holistic way. This report gives inspiration for firms across the sector to ensure a brighter future for everyone.”
Featuring case studies from both major contractors and SMEs, the report shows how the built environment can contribute meaningfully to goals ranging from climate action and biodiversity to education, employment and health.
Amanda Williams, CIOB’s head of environmental sustainability and co-author of the report, said: “Time is running out to deliver on these goals, so we must accelerate action now. This report will help our members use the SDGs to become more innovative and sustainable.”
Designed as a practical resource, the report supports CIOB’s wider mission to promote quality, skills and modern professionalism in construction. It is available to download via the CIOB website.
