MKM ramps up low-carbon efforts with net-zero branch
MKM Building Supplies has stepped up its sustainability efforts with the launch of a fully electric, BREEAM Excellent-rated branch in Cheltenham – part of a broader strategy to cut emissions across its nationwide network of depots.
The site is MKM’s first to be designed and built entirely to BREEAM Excellent standards, featuring a solar PV array, air-source heat pumps, intelligent LED lighting, and electric forklift trucks. Around 42% of the branch’s annual electricity needs will be met via solar generation, with the remainder supplied by a REGO-certified grid provider. Operational energy use is therefore carbon net-zero.
An electric delivery vehicle will also be introduced soon, supported by on-site EV charging points.
Rachel Constable, head of ESG at MKM, said: “We know that construction has a significant carbon footprint, and we’re not pretending we have all the answers. But we do have a clear and measurable plan to improve.”
Cheltenham marks a key milestone in MKM’s long-term environmental roadmap. However, the company acknowledges the challenges of retrofitting older branches – especially as many operate from leasehold properties. “We don’t own all of our sites, which means we have to collaborate with landlords to make changes,” added David Shaw, MKM’s head of special projects. “But attitudes are shifting. Greener buildings are more attractive to tenants and investors alike.”
MKM was recently awarded a Silver EcoVadis Medal, placing it among the top 15% of businesses globally for sustainability performance.
Beyond operational improvements, the company is expanding its portfolio of low-carbon products and systems – including air source heat pumps, solar PV, insulation solutions, permeable paving and biodiversity-enhancing products such as brick bird boxes and bee bricks. The merchant also offers Future Homes Standard-ready products, helping tradespeople and developers meet upcoming regulatory changes.
Several MKM branches now include dedicated display areas for low-carbon heating systems from leading brands, supported by MKM’s acquisition of HVAC specialist Oceanair. The platform Oceanashp.co.uk provides access to technical guidance, accredited training, and system design services.
Fleet decarbonisation is another area of focus. MKM has started transitioning its HGVs to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and currently operates a 50% electric forklift fleet across its network. Its first electric crane is also now operational.
“Our focus on sustainability isn’t just about compliance,” said Constable. “It’s about doing the right thing and leading the way in the industry.”
