UK concrete exports double as firms expand overseas
The number of UK businesses exporting non-metallic mineral products — including concrete — has doubled in the past year, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), analysed by money.co.uk.
Between 2022 and 2023, the number of exporters in this sector rose from 500 to 1,000 – a 100% increase. Businesses that both import and export also increased sharply, up 75% from 400 to 700. Imports rose by 57.1%, with 1,100 companies now trading concrete and similar products into the UK.
The findings form part of a wider snapshot of the UK’s export activity across sectors. Overall, the construction industry saw a 14.3% rise in the share of firms engaged in overseas trade — the third highest uplift of any British industry, behind arts and entertainment, and administrative services.
Joe Phelan, business credit cards expert at money.co.uk, said: “Global trade is constantly evolving. For exporters, the key to success lies in staying flexible and adaptable — whether that means exploring new markets, diversifying products, or adjusting supply chains.”
The sharp rise in concrete-related exports comes as British firms increasingly participate in overseas infrastructure projects, supported by government programmes such as the Infrastructure Exports: UK initiative and the Green Cities and Infrastructure Programme.
International demand for British construction consultancy, design services and specialist products — including precast and performance concrete — is also believed to be contributing to the growth. Cash flow pressures remain a challenge for smaller exporters, particularly in relation to long payment timelines and fluctuating exchange rates, the report warns.
Money.co.uk is encouraging SMEs to explore tools that can offer more resilience when navigating export complexity, including business finance products tailored to international operations.
The research comes shortly after the UK government signed a trade deal with India estimated to be worth nearly £6 billion in export wins.
ONS sector data refers to “non-metallic mineral products”, which includes cement, concrete, aggregates, and ceramics. Full breakdowns are available via the ONS trade data explorer.
