35 construction workers die in 2024/25 incidents
Construction recorded the highest number of work-related fatalities in Great Britain last year, with 35 deaths reported between April 2024 and March 2025, according to new data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The industry once again topped the fatality list, followed by agriculture, forestry and fishing (23). Overall, 124 workers died in work-related incidents in 2024/25, down from 138 the previous year but broadly in line with pre-pandemic levels.
The leading cause of death was falls from height, accounting for 35 cases—more than a quarter of all workplace fatalities. Other major causes included being struck by a moving object (18) and being trapped by something collapsing or overturning (17).
HSE chief executive Sarah Albon said: “Great Britain is one of the safest places in the world to work, but we must remember each of these deaths represents a tragedy. We urge against complacency on workplace safety.”
The report also recorded 92 deaths among members of the public who were killed in work-related incidents during the year.
The HSE’s separate mesothelioma data shows 2,218 deaths from the asbestos-related disease in 2023, continuing a gradual decline from previous years.
