The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has updated its official guidance on how employers should manage noise risks in the workplace, with implications for the UK’s concrete construction sector and other high-noise industries.

The revised publication, Controlling noise at work, incorporates the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 alongside fresh guidance to help employers understand and meet their legal obligations. The document outlines steps required to control risks from noise exposure and prevent permanent hearing damage.

Many workers across the construction industry – including those operating concrete saws, breakers, mixers and compressors – are regularly exposed to noise levels that can cause incurable hearing loss if not properly managed. The updated guidance aims to support businesses in assessing these risks and implementing effective control measures.

The HSE’s online noise exposure calculator, available through its “Noise at Work” webpages, remains a key tool for employers to calculate daily noise exposure and determine when action is required.

By improving understanding of the regulations and how they apply in real-world scenarios, the updated guidance seeks to reduce the number of workers developing long-term hearing issues caused by insufficient noise control.

Employers are encouraged to review their current risk assessments, provide adequate hearing protection where needed, and ensure staff are properly trained in safe work practices.
