ABM Precast Solutions has supplied a package of bespoke precast beams for the SIXEP Continuity Plant at Sellafield, Cumbria, one of the UK’s most complex nuclear infrastructure projects.

The new facility, designed to continue the treatment of radioactive effluent, is a critical upgrade at Europe’s largest nuclear site. Built to stringent safety and quality requirements, the project demanded millimetre accuracy across its structural elements to accommodate a dense array of mechanical and process systems.

ABM was engaged to deliver the multi-bay top floor precast roof structure, supplying dozens of beam variants. Each unit was cast to exacting tolerances, manufactured under strict nuclear sector specifications, and delivered defect-free to site. Close collaboration with Careys and Sellafield Ltd ensured the beams were installed seamlessly and supported the wider programme schedule.

Technical and logistical demands
The project required a combination of precision casting, rigorous quality assurance and careful site logistics. Beams had to be delivered in sequence to match a complex installation programme while integrating with advanced digital construction methods, including digital twin modelling and 4D programme visualisation.

ABM’s approach focused on:

  • Precision manufacture and quality control to achieve millimetre accuracy.
  • Just-in-time delivery aligned with construction sequencing.
  • Zero defects across all supplied units.
  • Full technical documentation to support integration with Sellafield’s digital systems.

Results
All precast beams were delivered and installed ahead of schedule, with zero reported defects, supporting the timely completion of the top floor slab. ABM’s contribution helped ensure that the project met critical programme milestones, controlled costs, and maintained compliance with the nuclear sector’s rigorous standards.

“The SIXEP Continuity Plant project demonstrates our capability to deliver precision-engineered precast beams for some of the most demanding infrastructure environments in the UK,” said Andy Parkin, sales manager at ABM Precast Solutions. “Our focus on quality, logistics and collaboration enabled us to support Sellafield’s commitment to safety and long-term performance.”
