Heidelberg Materials secures approval for new concrete batching plant in Somerset
Heidelberg Materials has received planning consent from Somerset Council for the construction and operation of a replacement concrete batching plant and associated facilities at its Bridgwater site in Somerset. The retrospective application, submitted in July 2025 and approved in September 2025, regularises the installation of a new batching facility.
The newly installed plant replaces the previous facility, originally consented under a 1964 planning permission. The batching plant has operated since that time and had recently reached the end of its economic life. The original structure was demolished and the new replacement plant installed to ensure continuous supply of ready-mixed concrete.
The replacement facility comprises a mixing tower with three silos aiming to achieve a maximum output of ~ 30,000m³ of concrete per annum. This is supported by the import of around 50,000 tonnes of aggregates and 9,000 tonnes of cement and additives each year.
Operational hours will remain consistent with the original consent, 06:00 to 19:00, Monday to Saturday, with occasional extended hours to accommodate specific infrastructure projects.
